Farnhamville Officials Notify Residents Of Excess Fluoride In Water Supply

The City of Farnhamville’s municipal water provider is notifying customers that its drinking water contains fluoride above the level that can cause cosmetic dental fluorosis in young children. The utility reported a fluoride concentration of 2.09 milligrams per liter. Water with fluoride levels above 2 milligrams per liter can discolor permanent teeth in children younger than nine years old while their teeth are developing. Dental fluorosis can appear as brown staining or pitting of permanent teeth. The water remains below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) four milligrams-per-liter enforceable drinking-water standard for fluoride, and adults and older children can safely drink the water. Farnhamville Water Supply advised parents not to give the water to children younger than nine until the fluoride has been removed or another source of drinking water is available. Parents also may consult a dentist about fluoride-containing products. In a post to social media, city officials note the fluoride found in the city’s water is naturally occurring.
