Documents prove dentists controlled CDC stance on water fluoridation

CBS ATLANTA - June 23, 2011

Opponents of water fluoridation say they have evidence that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has failed to consider its potentially harmful whole-body health effects.

For 65 years, CDC has promoted water fluoridation as a safe and healthy way to prevent tooth decay. It's even called one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.

But ingesting too much can cause dental fluorosis, characterized by permanent white or brown stains and spots on the teeth. In severe cases, people may experience pitting of the teeth.

Opponents wonder what else fluoride is doing to rest our bodies. And now, questions have been raised about conflicts of interest within the CDC.

Local health advocate for the Lillie Center, Daniel Stockin presented CBS Atlanta with a list of names and job descriptions of health professionals who've had input into the CDC's decision to support water fluoridation since the 1970s.

His concern is that the list contains only the names of dental health professionals - no toxicologists, minority health professionals, experts in diabetes, or anyone else outside the Oral Health Division.

"How can CDC oral health professionals in a department that has promoted fluoridation for decades be objective, let alone competent to assess research and draw conclusions about the toxicity of fluorides on thyroid glands, kidneys, and the pineal gland?" Stockin asked.

Stockin said a growing body of published research shows minorities, kidney patients, diabetics, babies and seniors are especially vulnerable to fluoride's potentially harmful effects.

He also cited a 2006 report by the National Research Council that states more research needs to be done on fluoride's whole-body health effects, yet the CDC has continued to promote water fluoridation as safe and effective "for all community residents."
