When was the term “fluorosis” first used?
Christiani and Gautier were the first to use the term ‘fluorosis’ in 1925. They called it "La Fluorose" and "Cachexie fluorique", using these terms to describe "fluoride intoxication" as induced by fluoride emissions and fluoride contaminated grass in the vicinity of a Swiss aluminum smelter.(The term "dental fluorosis" was not yet known.)
In 1912 Bartolucci had described "some cases of a strange disease among the cattle on a farm close to a superphosphate factory in Italy." He originally called it "osteitis", tracing it to fluorine originating from the factory. He used the term "fluorosis" first in a 1927 article, as a synonym to "cachexie fluorique", like Christiani did earlier.
