Fluoride 'over-feed' prompts 'Do Not Drink' order for Anson and Madison water
Residents of Anson and Madison face a Do Not Drink the Water advisory after excessive fluoride levels were detected, prompting an urgent investigation
News Center Maine - September 25, 2026
MADISON, Maine — The Anson and Madison Water District issued a Do Not Drink the Water order on Friday.
Due to an over-feed of fluoride into the water system, the advisory is in effect until further notice, with the district warning that it will most likely last until at least September 29.
Residents of the two towns should also avoid making ice cubes, preparing food, or brushing teeth with the water, according to the water district.
For those tasks, bottled water should be used instead. The same applies for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making baby formula, and filling pet bowls.
The CDC deems a safe amount of fluoride per liter of water to be 0.7 milligrams. Water in Anson and Madison tested at 5.0 milligrams.
The Anson and Madison Water District says the next update will come around noon Saturday.
Crews are working with the State of Maine Drinking Water Program to investigate the cause and extent of the over-feeding and to fix it.
The water district says no illnesses caused by drinking the water have been reported, though any symptoms should be reported to a doctor.
Anson and Madison residents are being asked to spread the word and should call the State of Maine Drinking Water Program at 207-287-2070 with any questions.
