Fuse Y, Ito Y, Shishiba Y, Irie M - "Current iodine status in Japan: a cross-sectional nationwide survey of schoolchildren, 2014–2019" Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 107(5):e2065-e2079 (2022) doi: 10.1210/clinem/dgab919

  • The overall median UIC was 269 μg/L. (Study states that this amount falls within WHO's "adequate" range, but it is clearly in the "more-than-adequate" range.)
  • Excess iodine intake (UIC ≥ 300 μg/L) was observed in 12 of 46 regions.
    • High UIC values exceeding 1 mg/L were found in 3960 of 32,025 children (12.4%).
