Children with UIC ≥300 μg/L have lower cognitive scores

A new study from the Rhea mother-child cohort in Greece reported that children with a urinary iodine concentration (UIC) of ≥300 μg/L had lower cognitive scores both at 4 and 6 years of age (Kampouri et al., 2024).

An earlier study (same cohort) showed that maternal thyroid autoimmunity was associated with decreased child perceptual and motor ability at 4 years of age, and adverse non-verbal cognitive development from infancy to childhood (Kampouri et al., 2021).

Maternal thyroid autoimmunity is most commonly seen in pregnant women exposed to more-than-adequate and excess iodine.
