Columbia Falls Aluminum fined $56,000
Associated Press - April 9, 2006
HELENA State regulators have fined Columbia Falls Aluminum Company for fluoride emissions that exceeded air-quality standards. The company was fined 56-thousand dollars.
It paid 14-thousand dollars, with the rest suspended on the condition that pollution controls at its plant in Columbia Falls be upgraded.
The company is required to spend at least 55-thousand dollars on the improvements.
State officials say fluoride emissions at the plant were a pound over the allowed monthly average in April 2004. Excess fluoride can be harmful to plants and humans.
