Apr 1, 2006 — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has fined the company that owns a Fairview Township water treatment plant $25,000 after a fluoride spill there in December.

The Dec. 10 spill at the Pennsylvania-American Water plant introduced elevated levels of fluoride into the drinking water supply, a DEP news release stated Friday.

Pennsylvania-American issued warnings to its customers in Fairview and Newberry townships, but they were infrequent and scattered, according to the news release.

A Pennsylvania Utility Commission report concluded the 600-gallon spill was caused by a plant operator rigging a pumping control.

The DEP imposed several conditions on Pennsylvania-American, including updating its operations and maintenance plans, providing additional training to operators, and reviewing its chemical handling procedures for any possible improvements.

Joi Corrado, Pennsylvania-American spokeswoman, said the company has already implemented many of the conditions.

"We believe the corrective actions are fair, and we are taking measures to improve public notification processes and other emergency response measures," she said.
