Report finds no negative long term impacts from Sandy fluoride water contamination

KUTV - June 21, 2021

By Jim Spiewak

SANDY, Utah (KUTV) — The water in one part of Sandy has been given the official all-clear more than two years after a fluoride contamination.

Back in 2019, fluoride from an inactive well rushed into the water system for two days before the leak was discovered — causing several people to get sick.

That sparked several investigations that two-and-a-half years later are now complete.

The final report, to be presented at Tuesday’s city council meeting, found there are no negative lasting effects on plumbing to the impacted homes and the leak did not result in any long-term rise in the lead or copper levels in tap water.

Two-hundred-seventy homes were impacted in one part of Sandy, which have been sampled extensively since the contamination.

Sandy’s public utility director Tom Ward says fluoride pumps are now disconnected from inactive wells, software has been updated and there’s someone monitoring wells 24/7.

In many ways, I’ve been telling people, Sandy is probably the safest water — if not the safest, it’s one of the safest in the country right now,” Ward said.

Ward says every impacted home was invited to have their water sampled. Samples were taken for a year-and-a-half, all showing safe levels.

“We have additional monitoring and various levels throughout the system that will catch the flaws that let this happen before,” Ward said.

While under review, the city had to take 60 water samples a quarter. With the city now fully compliant, that can go down to 30 a year.
