At least 12 dead, 7,000 evacuated after China chemical blast

Asia-Pacific News - July 29, 2006

Beijing - At least 12 people died and 7,000 residents were evacuated Friday after an explosion at a chemical plant in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, state media said.

At least seven people died instantly and five others died during emergency treatment after the explosion at the Fudu fluorine plant in Jiansu's Sheyang county, the semi-official China News Service said.

At least five others were injured and 7,000 people living within a two-kilometre radius of the plant were evacuated after the explosion about 9 a.m. (0100 GMT), the agency said.

A second chemical explosion on Friday caused a large fire and sent thick smoke over Shanghai's Baoshan district at about 8 a.m., injuring at least four people.

The fire at a hydrogen-peroxide plant run by Shanghai Yuanda Peroxides was extinguished later on Friday, reports said.

Experts were investigating the impact of the fumes and smoke on the local environment and the cause of the blast at the plant, which is a joint venture with a Hong Kong firm.
