Ma Y, Zhou Y, Wang J - "The effects of high-fluoride water sources on sex hormone-binding protein and estradiol levels in women" Guide of China Medicine 16(12):163-164 (2018) PFPC Library
Abstract:

Objective: To explore the effects of high-fluoride water sources on sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and estradiol levels in women.

Methods: Fifty-two female residents from a high-fluoride water exposure area (observation group) and 52 female residents from a low-fluoride water exposure area (control group) were selected as the study subjects. The fluoride content in the water in both locations, urinary fluoride levels, SHBG concentration, and estradiol concentrations were measured in both groups. The relationship between high-fluoride water sources and SHBG and estradiol levels in women was analyzed.

Results: The water and urinary fluoride concentrations in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group, while the serum SHBG and estradiol concentrations were significantly lower in the observation group than in the control group. All differences were statistically significant (t=13.326-15.020, P<0.05).

Conclusion: High-fluoride water sources reduce SHBG and estradiol levels in women. Fluoride concentration is negatively correlated with sex hormone levels in women, which should be given serious attention.
