AWWA to host webcast on fluoride

DENVER — The American Water Works Association (AWWA) will host a webcast on Wednesday, May 3, at 1-2:30 p.m. ET to discuss the March report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) that questions the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) maximum contaminant level for fluoride in drinking water, according to an April 19 AWWA press release.

The report, discussed by Water Tech Online® on March 23, said that the EPA's upper limit of 4 parts per million (ppm, or milligrams per liter) is too high to protect against fluoride's adverse health effects.

According to the press release, presenters for the AWWA webcast will discuss technical details of the NAS report, review the benefits of fluoride, and discuss treatment techniques when fluoride levels are too high.

Webcast presenters include John Doull, professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology in the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics at the University of Kansas Medical School; Kip K. Duchon, P.E., MSEnV, national fluoridation engineer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and David W. Heumann, M.S., P.E., M.B.A, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and chair, AWWA Fluoride Standards Committee.
