Indore: As many as 205 rural habitats (villages) in 10 districts of Madya Pradesh, including those in chief minister’s home district Vidisha, were found to have excessive fluoride content and are still awaiting safe drinking water. The facts came to fore in a National Health Profile-2022 report released recently by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare enlisting district wise rural habitats with excessive fluoride which are yet to be provided safe drinking water.

Of those, districts with tribal populations like Seoni (58), Chhindwara (38), Dindori (33) and Betul (26) have maximum rural habitats without safe drinking water in Madhya Pradesh, showed NHP-2022 report.

The other habitats without safe drinking water are in Shajapur (25), Vidisha (9), Sehore (8), Ratlam (6), and one each in Mandla and Tikamgarh district, showed MHP report.

Public health engineering department principal secretary Sanjay Shukla told TOI, “Every village in the state is provided with the safe drinking water in the state. Those villages, where there was a problem, were provided safe drinking water on priority under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).”

In MP, there are 1.11 crore households in rural areas with around 59% being connected with functional tap water as of November 14, showed the JJM dashboard maintained by the Union ministry of Jal Shakti. Shukla said, “It is correct that 59% households are provided piped drinking water till date. We are trying to connect every rural household with piped drinking water as early as possible and are continuously monitoring it through the JJM portal.”

The Union government is implementing National Programme for Prevention and Control of Fluorosis in 22 districts, including Dhar, Ujjain, Mandsaur, Bhopal and Neemuch, affected by the presence of fluoride in groundwater.
