8k in Dhar may be suffering from dental fluorosis

Times of India - February 10, 2022

Indore: Close to 8,000 people in Dhar are possibly suffering from dental fluorosis under at least 802 villages, which have been marked as fluorosis-affected. According to the experts, ingestion of excessive fluoride in drinking water in close to 50% villages of Dhar is causing tooth decay. While oral health is very important for overall wellness, people in at least 802 villages are suffering from dental issues due to the polluted water. Severe cases can be caused by exposure to water that is naturally fluoridated to levels above the recommended levels.

Dhar Zila Panchayat CEO KL Meena, during a meeting organized under National Fluorosis Prevention and Control Programme, informed the gathering that a laboratory established in the district hospital is conducting fluorosis tests on every Tuesday and Friday.

“There are a total 802 fluoride-affected villages in the district while the number of people so far underwent the test is 24,524. Of this, the number of possible dental fluorosis patients is 7,889 while the number of confirmed skeletal fluorosis patients is seven. As many persons have been distributed caliper shoes” a presentation by the district fluorosis consultant Dr MD Bharti revealed, adding that an orthopedic surgeon of MY Hospital had in 2018 operated upon a patient suffering from fluorosis disease.

According to doctors, paramedical staff, field workers including ANM, MPW, ASHA and Anganwadi workers and teachers have been provided training to help controlling fluorosis disease while IEC activities including handbills, posters, pamphlets, flex printing and slogan writing are helping in generating awareness. “Patients affected by fluorosis have been kept under observation and are being provided calcium and vitamin-C medicines” he said. The meeting was informed that the Public Health Engineering Department is testing handpumps and tubewells to check the fluoride level. If the fluoride level is more than 1.00 ppm, the handpumps and tube-wells are either shut down or painted with yellow colour.
