FDA allows bottlers to make fluoride health claim
WASHINGTON – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on its Web site that bottlers of fluoridated water will be allowed to make the claim that their water may reduce the risk of dental cavities or tooth decay.
Bottlers will have to submit the notification of a health claim at least 120 days before the water is introduced onto the market; the claim cannot be used on bottled water for children, the report noted.
Bottled water eligible for the claim must contain more than 0.6 milligram but less than 1 milligram per liter of total fluoride, the FDA said.
According to the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), there are more than 20 companies that produce fluoridated brands of bottled water.
