Abstract :
Objective: To investigate the effects of high fluoride and combined iodine-fluoride exposure on the composition of phospholipids and fatty acids in rat erythrocyte membranes.

Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were selected and administered fluoride-containing drinking water (150 mg/L) along with potassium iodide solutions at different concentrations (0.003, 0.03, 3 mg/L) for a period of 5 months. The content of phospholipids and fatty acids in rat erythrocyte membranes was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography.

Results: In the high iodine-high fluoride group, the phospholipid content in rat erythrocyte membranes decreased. In the high fluoride group, the levels of unsaturated fatty acids in rat erythrocyte membranes decreased, while the levels of saturated fatty acids increased. Moderate concentrations of iodine exhibited a synergistic toxic effect.

Conclusion: Long-term excessive fluoride intake led to changes in the composition of phospholipids and fatty acids in rat erythrocyte membranes, characterized by a reduction in unsaturated fatty acids, possibly due to enhanced lipid peroxidation caused by increased levels of free radicals. A certain concentration of iodine may have a synergistic effect on the composition of phospholipids and fatty acids in erythrocyte membranes of fluoride-poisoned rats.
