Panel tries to determine if link exists between C8, ailments

CBS - November 14, 2006

VIENNA, W.Va. (AP) Members of a science panel charged with studying the possible health effects of the chemical C-Eight say the study could take five years and cost up to 15 (m) million dollars.

Two of the three panelists, all scientists, spoke today in Wood County. They say they plan to do nine separate studies and would like to do a tenth if the court allows it.

The earliest results could be in by early 2007.

The studies will examine C-Eight's effects on everything from heart disease to cancer.

The panel is part of a 2004 settlement of a class-action lawsuit filed by West Virginia and Ohio residents over the contamination of their water supplies by the chemical, also known as P-F-O-A. The chemical is used by DuPont's Washington Works plant near Parkersburg in the manufacture of Teflon.

DuPont says those cases are statistically insignificant and may be coincidental to the use of C-Eight.
