DuPont workers test positive for chemical presence

FOX News - Oct. 1, 2006

RICHMOND, Va. Blood samples taken from some employees of a DuPont Company plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia, have tested positive for a controversial man-made chemical.

The substance is P-F-O-A and some studies show it can cause liver, developmental and reproductive problems in laboratory animals. It also has turned up in the blood of workers at a plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The company gave blood tests to 89 employees. Because the results of individual tests are confidential, officials won't say how many of the 89 employees tested positive.

One union leader says the highest P-F-O-A level was detected in a female employee.

Last year, DuPont agreed to pay a 16-point-five (m) million-dollar penalty for allegedly withholding information about the potential health and environmental risks posed by P-F-O-A after the chemical was found in the blood of workers at a West Virginia plant.
