C8 health screening reopens to accept another 1,500 residents

The Associated Press - May 24, 2006

By Danielle Fink

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) -- A health study involving a chemical used to produce Teflon will be reopened to accept another 1500 residents.
The screening was closed in February when it appeared 70-thousand Ohio and West Virginia residents had qualified for the study.

Project coordinators say the process will be reopened for one month because many of the original applicants did not meet eligibility requirements.

The study is part of a settlement with DuPont over the company's use of the chemical C-Eight at its plant near Parkersburg.

Residents sued in 2001, claiming DuPont contaminated their water supplies.

The settlement involves people living in six public water districts in West Virginia and Ohio.

DuPont has maintained the chemical is not a human health hazard.
