Four die in Serbia factory blast

BBC - May 29, 2006

Four people have been killed by an explosion at a chemical plant near the Serbian capital Belgrade.

At least three others were hurt in the blast at Prva Iskra factory at Baric.

The interior ministry says the plant produces explosives as well as toxic hydrofluoric acid which is used in household detergents.

Police sealed off the area as a fire followed the huge explosion, which was reportedly heard in Belgrade, 25km (16 miles) away.

Police said the explosion occurred in the part of the factory that produces explosives, not toxic chemicals.

Army, police, fire and ambulance services were sent to the scene.

Serbian television reports that the local school and nearby shops have been closed.

The factory, on the bank of the Sava River, was targeted by Nato air strikes in April 1999.
