India aims to pure drinking water for all villagers by 2009

Xinhua Online - May 5, 2006

NEW DELHI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Each of India's 600,000 villages will get access to pure drinking water by 2008-09 under the government's nationwide development mission, Indian Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said here Friday.

"It's already one year since we started the program under which we have to provide pure drinking water to all villages," Prasad was quoted by Indo-Asian News Service as saying at a two-day national workshop on technologies for drinking water.

So far, in many parts of the country Indian has achieved success and the remaining zones will be covered by 2008-09, he said.

Villagers still believe that groundwater is the purest form of water and don't know it contains various impurities like iron, chloride, fluoride and arsenic, which are the root cause of many illness, he added.

Prasad said his ministry had provided sufficient funds to local governments for clean water and it was now their reasonability to take necessary action.
