Fluoride in water blamed for kidney ailments

The high level of fluoride in North Central Province water has resulted in an increase in kidney disease, the Institute of Fundamental Studies (IFS) based on research finding revealed.

Kidney disease, also known as chronic renal disease, is widely spreading in the North Central Province.

According to research, IFS found that the Fluoride percentage in the water in areas in the Province is above the normal figure. Fifty five to 60 percent of water in wells in the North Central Province has over in 1 mg/L Fluoride. The healthy Fluoride content should be below 1 mg/L.

Kekirawa, Maha Alagamuwa, Giribawa, Galgamuwa, Jayanthipura, Polonnaruwa and Kahatagasdigiliya have been identified as areas where Kidney disease is spreading. There is also a possible danger of Dental Fluorosis and Bones Fluorosis spreading in the zone.
