Government medical officers in the rural and tribal blocks are asking primary school students not to use toothpastes containing fluoride. Though there has been no instruction from the Primary Health Centres in this regard, some medical officers from the rural blocks have taken individual measures asking students and parents not to use such toothpastes as a precautionary step against fluorosis.
Dr Dinkar Raval, Chief District Health Officer (CDHO), Mehsana, said: “There are some blocks in Mehsana district with high occurrence of fluorosis, which leads to damage of the dental enamel. Normally, the fluoride content is just 0.5 milligram, but most of the blocks in the district show fluoride content much beyond that. ”
He refused to comment on the number of students affected by fluorosis, but added, “We are trying to tell their parents not to use toothpastes that aggravate fluorosis.”
