Rising cases of fluorosis in Nakuru county are raising concern among health officials, with medics calling for urgent measures to arrest the situation.

The disorder is said to affect the youths more than any other group, with doctors attributing the health issue to the high fluoride contents in water that is being consumed in the area.

A representative from the Nakuru level 5 hospital, Dr. Jacob Murima, while speaking during a free medical camp organised by Robinson Security Company at Nyayo gardens, Nakuru, regretted that the fluorosis cases were on the increase seeing as it is a manageable condition.

Murima observed that water from shallow boreholes contains high amounts of fluoride and needs to be treated before consumption.

“Majority of the dental conditions treated in this hospital are caused by flourosis," he said.

Robinson Security representative, Lydia Karuga said the problem required urgent intervention, adding that the water crisis could be resolved if leaders from the area worked as a team to ensure quality and affordable water was accessible to all.

Most youths seeking employment in government departments such as security forces have in the past been left out following the dental problem that has left their teeth coloured.
