India Express News Service - November 7, 2016

HYDERABAD: The International Society for Fluoride Research in association with National Institute of Nutrition will be hosting the 33rd International conference in Hyderabad from November 9 to 11.

The theme of the conference this year is ‘Debilitating Fluorosis: Current Status, Health Challenges & Mitigation Measures.’ The meet will be inaugurated by health minister C Laxma Reddy.

The biennial event is being held in India for the first time at NIN in Hyderabad. About 18 delegates from countries like China, Turkey, Iran, New Zealand, Japan, United States and Thailand and 180 delegates from across India are expected to participate in the conference. The delegation includes Sunsanee Rajchagool, president, International Committee of the Society for Fluorosis from Thailand and eminent Defluoridation scientist E Dahi from Tanzania.

Speaking about the conference, Dr Arjun Khandare, vice president & organising secretary, International Committee of the Society for Fluorosis & HoD, Food Technology Division at NIN said, “The aim of this conference is to share and discuss the results of the research on Fluorosis undertaken across the globe to help tackle the issue efficiently. As many as 110 abstract and poster presentations are expected to be made during the event and two of the best papers would be presented with Niloufer Chinoy Awards for the best oral and poster presentations by the researchers aged less than 35 years.”

Padmashri awardee A S Narayana, organising committee member, who spent last 30 years on the research in the fluoride affected areas, said, “The fruits of research on Fluorosis should reach people who are suffering the most. Our work in the villages of Fluoride-hit Nalgonda district in the last few years has given tremendous results in getting rid of the Fluoride menace gradually. Our study was specific to a village Madava Yadavalli in Narketpally mandal where we have taken some measures like desilting the ground thus making the soil fertile for farming and providing water filters to the villagers which filter the excessive fluoride with minimum loss of other minerals. Other measures undertaken during our research would be discussed.”
