Bid to assess Fluorosis-affected areas in Hojai district

GUWAHATI, April 20 - The India Natural Resource Economics and Management (INREM) Foundation held the third convergence meeting at the Tapatjuri Fluoride Mitigation Centre (FMC) in Hojai district on April 18 under the presidentship of former Additional Chief Engineer of the State’s Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Najibuddin Ahmed, stated a press release.
The meeting decided to undertake a thorough survey of Hojai district to assess the fluoride and Fluorosis-affected areas and to know the exact number of Fluorosis-hit people in the district. It called for including the calcium-rich food items in the mid-day meals served to the school children of the district.
The participants of the meeting resolved to undertake a massive plantation drive throughout the district on June 5, which is the World Environment Day, to create an easily accessible storehouse of vitamin C and calcium-rich fruits, which have tremendous potential to resist Fluorosis.
The meeting further decided to arrange for the necessary certificates and adequate trainings for those who are affected by Fluorosis. For the purpose of imparting training to the victims of Fluorosis, a common facility centre was also proposed by the participants of the meeting.
The officials of the Health Department, who were present at the meeting, assured steps to examine the urine and blood samples of the children of the district so as to know the exact health condition of the district’s kids.
UNICEF Project Specialist S Patnayak assured help to improve the condition of the Disable Institute set up by the INREM and also to render some more helps for the benefit of the Fluorosis-affected people.
INREM Foundation Assam unit coordinator AB Paul, State Health Department’s Dr Achyut Bora and Ranjan Goswami, Tapatjuri Fluoride Mitigation Centre coordinator Dharani Saikia, among others, were present at the meeting, the press release added.
