Mottled teeth are found as a partial symptom of "volcanic disease of Aso" which is prevalent among the inhabitants of the old crater of Aso Volcano. The hot-spring town of Hinaku belongs to the district covered with lava of Aso Volcano. Among 405 school boys there, 180 were found to have mottled teeth. The total number of patients with mottled teeth is greater in males than in females, but the percentage is similar in both sexes. Severely mottled teeth are not found, but lesser effects such as teeth with grey-white spots or lines are more frequent; these latter 2 types of mottled teeth often appear simultaneously in the same boy. The total number of mottled teeth was 1,016 of which 670 were in the upper jaw and 346 in the lower; it appears most frequently in upper incisors. Mottled teeth were observed in milk teeth.
